The Farmer Battles Pond Scum
How’s that for a great title? Maybe we could make a movie, “The Farmer Battles Pond Scum.” And all the sequels where he gets rid of it again, and again, and again….
Our pond is spring-fed and looked lovely until we had a flood that got high enough to seep water into the pond. It was a bummer watching the dirty water swirl into the pond.
By the time it was done, the entire pond was muddy looking. And it’s never recovered.
Now it grows algae. LOTS of algae.
This picture actually looks pretty good. I took it right after it had rained and a lot of the scum temporarily sunk out of sight. Previously, the entire surface was covered.
The Farmer decided to take matters in hand and ordered some stuff to add to the water. He sprayed it on the algae he could reach around the edges of the pond last Saturday. The following day, the algae was turning dark.
I think the algae that was around the edges is dying, but patches have scattered over the top of the pond, so it’s kind of hard to tell.
Here’s what it looks like today:
As promised, the stuff The Farmer sprayed on the pond doesn’t seem to have bothered the wildlife. I disturbed a snake and a turtle when I went to take this picture, not to mention the numerous frogs that are hopping around.
I guess we’ll see what happens after Round 2!
