Starting Seedlings Indoors Update!

March 1, 2013

Planting seeds and watching little plants pop up is such fun!  It’s one of the neatest things about starting seedlings indoors.  Here it is, less than a week since I planted seeds in the planting trays, and already several are growing.

Just yesterday, 5 days after the seeds were planted, the first began sprouting up. It didn’t take long!  And of course, this morning when I looked, there were even more little plants starting to grow.

The tomatoes are the winners of the “First to Sprout” prize.  I have six varieties planted, but so far only three have germinated.  Here’s what is presently growing:

4 Long Keeper Tomatoes that will look like this when harvested:

A friend of mine grows these and shared a couple of plants with me last year. I decided I’d like more of them, because it’s nice being able to store tomatoes and have fresh ones to eat for 6-12 weeks after frost has killed the plants in the garden.  They are much better than anything you can buy in the grocery stores!

3 Roma VF Tomatoes

The Romas are the classic Italian paste tomato, and make such good sauces! Last year, I just just cut them in half and froze them. Easy peasy!

3 Whopper Tomatoes

These are supposed to be crack-resistant, and 4 or more inches across. Big and juicy! High Yields! Well, we’ll test it out and see what we get.

I haven’t planted a lot of tomato seeds because there are only three people living here, and we can only eat so much.  But still, I may plant a few more tomorrow in the planting trays, so I’ll be sure to have plenty.

Of course, there are 3 more varieites yet to germinate already in the Bio Dome, along with three kinds of peppers.  The Farmer loves banana peppers, and last year we had a really tough time finding plants, so I figured I’d better start some from seeds this year to be sure we have some.

Wondering where to buy seeds?  I got most of my seeds from my Favorite Seeds & Plants at Burpee.com!  I’ve used them for years and years, and always had good luck with the seeds.  Even ones I’ve saved over from previous years have a good germination rate.

So there you have it, the starting seedlings indoors update!  Stay tuned, as more plants germinate, and more seeds are planted.  It’s fun to dream of a garden full of fresh veggies when the skies are gray and the weather is cold!
